“In Puerto Rican painter Susan Olivera’s case, her art has been born of pain, serious play and gratitude. Upon leaving her career in pharmaceuticals, Susan started painting in 2012 after surviving breast cancer. Her first painting, titled “Sobreviví,” which means “I survived” in English, is part of the Jimenez-Colón Collection, one of Puerto Rico’s biggest art collections.

“I needed to get that out of my system,” says Susan. “I cried doing that first piece.”

Through her commitment to telling the stories of women who have battled breast cancer, she became the main organizer and curator of the Breast Cancer Art Project’s exhibition in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. This led to her becoming the second Puerto Rican so far to exhibit at London’s Tate Modern.”
